Safety on the road is essential and in many cases accidents occur that end up causing one of the worst endings, where the loss of life, already whether human or animal are in the foreground. According to the Race Foundation together with Royal Canin in one of its latest studies it has been estimated that in the last five years there have been almost more than a thousand traffic accidents with victims in them.
One of the risks that also concern both organizations are the abuses of pets in interurban environments sometimes produced by a distraction of their owners, leading to road accidents in which third parties are involved with unpredictable consequences. Therefore, according to data from the DGT, there have been 967 accidents on interurban roads with traffic victims due to the running over of pets, which means 866 accidents due to collision with a dog and 101 accidents due to the running over of cats.
Both Royal Canin and the Race Foundation have been working on identifying the dangerous kilometre points, where this type of accident has occurred thanks to the DGT and the interior department of the Basque Country. In order to have a greater view of the risk, the RACE Foundation extended the analysis section to a maximum range of 25 kilometers, whichyudó to find sections in which every year there were accidents with pets such as dogs and cats.
It should be noted that the figures in a temporary period of five years are really alarming, and that is that there have been more than 18,000 traffic accidents where there have been significant damages due to the abuse of this type of domestic animals, in which 2,762 dogs and 1,032 cats have been involved.
The RACE Foundation sees the need for the competent administrations at national, regional and local level to carry out audits that help to know the origin of the problem of these abuses and thus carry out effective improvement interventions on roads and in adjoining localitiess. Therefore, it is necessary to study the situation perfectly so that this type of actions do not occur again in which animals or people lose their lives.
